Interior of Cathedral, Arras

Image by National Library of Scotland
Destruction at Arras Cathedral, France. The photograph is taken looking down the central aisle of the church. The interior looks fairly intact but the floor is hidden by mounds of rubble mostly from the collapsed roof.
A lot of French architecture and land was devastated by the fighting. Images of destroyed cathedrals, churches and graveyards are common amongst the official ‘propaganda’ photographs, since they would evoke strong emotions against the enemy amongst those of a religious persuasion.
