The Extended Mind: Recent Experimental Evidence

Google Tech Talks September 2, 2008 ABSTRACT We have been brought up to believe that the mind is located inside the head. But there are good reasons for thinking that this view is too limited. Recent experimental results show that people can influence others at a distance just by looking at them, even if they look from behind and if all sensory clues are eliminated. And people’s intentions can be detected by animals from miles away. The commonest kind of non-local interaction mental influence occurs in connection with telephone calls, where most people have had the experience of thinking of someone shortly before they ring. Controlled, randomized tests on telephone telepathy have given highly significant positive results. Research techniques have now been automated and experiments on telepathy are now being conducted through the internet and cell phones, enabling widespread participation. Speaker: Rupert Sheldrake Rupert Sheldrake, Ph.D. is a biologist and author of more than 75 technical papers and ten books, the most recent being The Sense of Being Stared At. He studied at Cambridge and Harvard Universities, was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge and a Research Fellow of the Royal Society. He is currently Director of the Perrott-Warrick project, funded from Trinity College Cambridge.

Haha !! In fact, would any Scientist like to wire my Brain up, although I do believe all that data is gathered already, although we are all still evolving …. and why these silly questions from his audience, (I tend to be quite opinionated too), Holistic Trained on Paper/Certified. I am liking Rupert Sheldrake :O) ~ Every Body needs to speak TRUTH, too much taboo !

Mystics meet Science, I totally agree, he speaks my Mind, I have only studied in the Universe of My Mind, I would Love to study Science at Universe City, I have applied for Bio-Chemistry on lived experience and Dr referrals. Still unsure which path to take education wise to give myself the credit to speak.

@trefod Actually, I think he has made up his made about what his research DOES show, not what it WILL show.

  4. trefod says:

Unfortunately Mr. Sheldrake’s mind seems to be made up about what results his research will show.

This is awesome! I have a MA in Consciousness Studies and I’m a hypnotherapist. I’ve often felt that our minds are larger than our skulls and that our thoughts and consciousness spread out affecting everything and everyone around us. I know that when I’m working with people it’s a powerful experience when they tune into the idea that their thoughts are expansive and it somehow affects change within them.

@crtx2 He may be. Consider that you are surrounded by a magnetic field. Consider the spectrum of infra-red ultraviolet light, consider that there are many possible spectrum we have yet to discover. Consider now that the magnetic field of your body contains energy we have yet to detect. Yet are still there doing what ever it is they do. The group think and mob mentality of current understanding are actually in “quantum phase coherence modulation of the Unified Field of Consciousness”. Consider.

  11. EternalRecursion says:

@crtx2 You are obviously an intelligent fellow, but just as obviously, we are coming from very different (diametrically opposed?) paradigms. I agree that not everything has to reduce to QM, but I consider Consciousness to be the highest of “any higher level of abstraction.” I assume you view consciousness as a rather minor consideration of brain research? Since I honestly don’t know, is self awareness even defined in neuro-chemistry? Sincerely, good luck.

@EternalRecursion [6] and quantumprobabilistically might have a better point of reference in the Universally contigous and omni-modulated continuum of information with you than I have, so to speak.. Take care!

  13. crtx2 says:

@EternalRecursion [5] far as to say it’s related to some Unified Field of Peacock Mating Rituals. If you see yourself as “a phase coherent field contained point of reference in a Universally contiguous, omni-modulated continuum of information” as you state, then I agree any further exchanges would be pointless. I think you would find videos by Deepak Chopra relevant to your interests btw. He might be in a better quantum phase coherence modulation of the Unified Field of Consciousness with you,

@EternalRecursion [4] Google: italian cold fusion to see what I mean? Or what about all those water powered engines? Lots of videos about them here on YouTube. And they work! Just look! Do have an open mind, but don’t be gullible, even if lectured by someone with a Ph.D. who has lost his way. Consciousness does seem to be an artifact of neural complexity, and it does indeed exist, I have no argument with you on that point. The mating rituals of peacocks also exist. But I wouldn’t go as ..

  15. crtx2 says:

@EternalRecursion [3] would strike you as contradictory to ridicule “fields of evil” or spells or perhaps karma.. luminiferous aether?, while at the same time acknowledging the non-local state of the most basic constituent component of existence. Would it also be a prejudical stance to declare cold fusion disproven, and the results from those italian physicists that I read about the other day invalid and/or flawed? The ones who did achieve cold fusion and have almost gone commercial with it?

  16. crtx2 says:

@EternalRecursion [2] existence is everywhere at the same time (that doesn’t even make sense). The probability collapse you speak of is due to the copenhagen interpretation, and it’s not the only one. I was just saying that there is no boundary that separates space into that which is occupied by an atom, and that which is not. I did not declare anything impossible. I ridiculed the existence of such things as “fields of consciousness”. To help you understand my point of view, ask yourself if it

  17. crtx2 says:

@EternalRecursion [1] Look, just because QM is at the base of everything doesn’t mean one has to reduce things to it all the time. That would be a horrendous experience when discussing anything on any higher level of abstraction. That’s why evolutionary biologists don’t bother with quantum foam or the quantum mechanical aspects of the DNA molecule when dealig with punctuated equilibriums or kin selection. The same applies to neuroscience vis a vis QM. And no, I did not say that every point of

@crtx2 … contiguous, omni-modulated continuum of information. I don’t wish you any ill will, but it strikes me that any further exchanges would be pointless. Can we agree on that?

  21. EternalRecursion says:

@crtx2 … of perception? Who is the observer of self existence? Do you simply declare that the observer is an artifact of neural complexity, an automatic process programmed by Nature to falsely believe itself to exist? The disconnect in this dialogue seems to be that you consider yourself an egocentrically referenced individual, unique and separate object in a universe of things, while I see myself as a phase coherent field contained point of reference in a Universally …

  22. EternalRecursion says:

@crtx2 “Where does quantum mechanics come into the picture?” Is consciousness part of the Unified Field of energy, the medium, we call reality, or not? If it is, then it must have an energetic state, even if that state has not been identified. The holographic projection witnessed by the resident self may be explainable by the innate time lag of the resonance of the neural processing, but that does not explain the “self” who is the witness. Why not simply declare that the “self” is an error …

  23. EternalRecursion says:

@crtx2 … of the most basic constituent component of existence strikes me as contradictory. “Parapsychological phenomena such as telepathy have been disproven over and over again.” How? Since the whole point of this video is that multiple studies under controlled conditions have repeatedly shown statistically demonstrable results, one is left to conclude that it is a prejudicial stance to declare telepathy disproven and the study results invalid and/or flawed.

  24. EternalRecursion says:

@crtx2 “Honestly I don’t see what quantum mechanics has to do with any of this.” At the base of everything material is quantum mechanics. “In quantum mechanics, an atom occupies all of space, although not uniformly.” So, aren’t you saying that every point of existence is everywhere at the same time until it is observed, at which point the probability collapses to a defined locale? My point being that to arbitrarily declare something not possible while acknowledging the non-local state …

  25. crtx2 says:

@EternalRecursion (5) terminology again. By a physical principle I think of any principle which the physical world (reality) follows, and by methaphysical I mean principles that are not physical principles. It is unknown where physical principles originate. Honestly I don’t see what quantum mechanics has to do with any of this. Parapsychological phenomena such as telepathy have been disproven over and over again. Where does quantum mechanics come into the picture?
