Q&A: What does persuasion, manipulation, and encouragement have in common?

Question by Ryoomi: What does persuasion, manipulation, and encouragement have in common?
I had to give my own definition of rhetoric – and I responded with those three words. My professor said: “Yes, rhetoric can persuade, manipulate, and encourage. But what do all of these hold in common?”

Idk, but I have to figure it out for this paper due tomorrow. Any help?

They’re all motivational techniques… I’m not sure if that’s what you’re looking for, but it is true.

For one, rhetoric is always thought of as verbal. There are no rhetorical images or gestures that I have heard of, but I’m not sure why not. How do you do these three things with words? You use rhetoric.

These are all ways that people use to make other people do what they want them to do and what the other people just might not want to do, so they have to be persuaded, manipulated, or encouraged, and even though the people that have been led in this way may decide to cooperate, they may also resent the way they have been led. Wow, this could go on forever! Good luck on your paper, I think your prof may be manipulating you.
