<p>So what do you do when you suddenly find yourself lost? That&#8217;s what happened to me once. I heard from a friend of a friend about this magnificent party, and he&#8217;d heard from another friend some convoluted directions to get there. Both of us, and the friend, had only been living in the area for a few weeks, so it was pretty obvious what was going to happen. They were going to go straight after work, which was about 6 PM, while I had to work until a couple hours later.</p>
<p>I remembered the directions as best as I could, and decided I&#8217;d figure out how to get there on my own. It didn&#8217;t take long before I had no idea where I was, no idea where I came from, and no idea how to get back home.</p>
<p>I had a really interesting experience a couple of weeks ago. I had just moved to a new city, and a new apartment. I mean new for me, as well as a new building. Everything was new and modern and really cool. I had spent a few hours driving to this new town from my old town, which involved driving over this huge bridge (several miles long) since my previous apartment was on this big island. A really big island.</p>
<p>So there I was, about to drift off to sleep, when an idea hit me. I had spend all day packing moving, unpacking and setting things up in my new place, I looked around at my new familiar surroundings, and I predicted I would wake up in the morning and experience a few moments of absolute disorientation. When you look around and for brief moment, you don&#8217;t know where you are, how you got there, or the last few things that happened before you found yourself in your particular situation.</p>
<p>That has only happened to me a couple times, all after waking up in a strange place. Probably the most pronounced event was a night of heavy, um, entertainment after a Who concert. I woke up in my friends house, and for about five or ten seconds (which is a long time to have no clue where you are or how you got there) of complete discombobulation.</p>
<p>But as I lay in my apartment a couple of weeks ago, I looked around at my new furnishings, and actually predicted I would wake up in the morning and draw a complete blank for the first few moments.</p>
<p>And when I woke up, just as I thought, I drew a complete blank. But here&#8217;s the cool part:  Before I remembered where I was and how I got there (moving and driving over the bridge) I remembered predicting that I wouldn&#8217;t remember, only then did I remember everything else.</p>
<p>It was like back in the old days of when they had to bootstrap the first computers. They had these giant machines that ran off of punch cards, and they had no memory at all. They didn’t have enough memory to turn on all their systems.</p>
<p>So the guy who was using the computer had to feed it a punch card that was only to tell the computer how to turn itself on and get started, and how to read the other punch cards. Once that &#8220;memory&#8221; was loaded into the computer, then you could stick other, more complicated, punch cards into the machine so it could finally be able to do what you wanted it to.</p>
<p>We take all that for granted, as all of our computers today are pre programmed with complex operating systems and software that makes virtually every machine plug and play.  There&#8217;s a reason Bill Gates is one of the richest dudes on the planet.</p>
<p>That was a truly odd sensation, waking up in a strange looking around in complete and utter cluelessness, and then remembering that I wasn&#8217;t going to remember anything, and then starting to remember everything else.</p>
<p>And when I finally figured out enough to back track to someplace familiar, I was able to use that familiarity to backtrack to a road that I actually knew. And from there finding my way was home was easy. I had given up on going to the party (which I later heard wasn&#8217;t all that exciting, anyway) long ago.</p>
<p>No matter how far off track you get, your brain will always find ways to get back to what is familiar. That seems to be an underlying prime directive of our brains. Familiarity.</p>

<p>I used to go on these long bike rides a couple days a week after work, and even some longer ones on the weekend. After work I didn&#8217;t have much time, so I&#8217;d to either go on a loop, or go on a long up and back trip to some particular destination that was interesting enough to go to. Usually the beach. What was cool about riding to the beach was that by the time I got there, the winds were just starting to pick up, giving me a pretty good push on the way back. I had one of those digital speedometers which measure average, max and all that. Not only was my average speed on the way back much faster, but also I exerted much less effort, as I had a strong wind at my back.</p>
<p>Of course there was an occasional weather pattern that would really mess things up. Coming back was really difficult, which made it hard to plan my energy exertion. Usually on the way down, I&#8217;d go all out, knowing coming back would be pretty easy. But to go out all the way down (about twenty miles) and then turn around only to find I&#8217;d messed up, and going back was going to be much more difficult that going down, that wasn&#8217;t too much fun.</p>
<p>I remember I took this really cool NLP seminar once. The last day we spent a large portion working on setting up our timelines. If you have never done any first hand time line stuff, it can be pretty powerful. To get a rough approximation of how your own personal time line is set up, imagine some things from your recent past, your medium past, and your far back past, and figure out where you keep them around you. For example, if you think of something you did yesterday, how do you represent that picture? Where is it? In front of you? In back of you? Above you? Below you? Likewise with something that happened a couple weeks or a couple years ago.</p>
<p>If you take the time to figure out where you keep things, it can have an impact on how well you do on projects you take on, and how well you get over things you wish you&#8217;d done differently.</p>
<p>For example, say you have this big goal of cleaning your garage. If you picture a clean garage as some big huge picture that is ahead of you, but far off in the distance, and way up high, then you might respond with stress or anxiety when you think of cleaning the garage. Not only is it far away, but it&#8217;s a long hill as well.</p>
<p>On the other hand, if you picture your clean garage as up close, and slightly down, then it might be easy. Anything that is close and downhill is easy to get to. Also, you may picture your clean garage kind of off to the side, almost behind you, so when you visualize it you have to strain your neck to even be able to see it. In this case you&#8217;d likely not even ever start. You&#8217;d only have this vague idea of wanting (or needing) to clean your garage.</p>
<p>One metaphor we tried at that seminar was going out into our future, using various hallucinations. Time machines, magic hot air balloons, floating lawn chairs. And as we went into our own futures, we placed presents for ourselves so that we could find them as we went through time toward our choices and goals. Both as encouragement to find along the way, and as proof that we were along the right path.</p>
<p>One trick you can do is to imagine your future goal, way out there. Maybe six months or a year. Then come up with five or ten things you&#8217;ll find along the way that will let you know that you are absolutely on track. The cool thing about this is they can be vague. You only need to give them certain colors and feelings. Your unconscious will work the details out later. You can also think of things that will help you along the way. Maybe chance encounters with strangers, or random occurrences with people you don&#8217;t know. Come up with five or ten of these as well.</p>
<p>Then imagine that you have these ten or twenty pictures, and fling them into your metaphorical future, and watch them sail out ahead of you. Some will go out only a little ways; some will go out almost to the end.</p>
<p>Then days or weeks later, when you are out cruising along, you&#8217;ll find one of these instances that you gave yourself from your past, and it will remind you how important your choice is, or give you proof that you&#8217;re already well on your way.</p>
<p>Of course, this is all a hallucination, but a useful one. If you come across a strange looking cat, you can interpret it to mean nothing more than everyday randomness. Or you can interpret it as aliens spying on your from planet Xexok, or you can interpret it as proof, given to present self, from your past self, that you are well on your way to achieving whatever it is you want to achieve.</p>
<p>Another way to use timelines is to go into your past and change your history. You can grab some resources from the present, hop onto your magic lawn chair, and float back into your past when you had some particular troubles before. Then you can float down just before the trouble happened, give your past self some of the resources from the present, and then step back and watch your past self go through the scenario again, but this time with more resources. And when I say resources, I don&#8217;t mean some magic sword to stab that third grade bully in the throat, I&#8217;m talking about a broader perspective, to give your past self much more understand of what was going on, so your past self can have more choice in giving meaning to whatever situation it was that used to give you trouble.</p>
<p>Then after you give your past self the resources, you can go back and relive the experience, only this time remember your present self (back then your future self) coming from the future to give you resources. Then go into the situation with those resources so you can get a better handle on things. Maybe your second grade teacher yelled at you, and at the time your only conclusion was that you were an idiot. Only when you go back to give yourself some resources, you might let your past self know that people are generally goofballs, and don&#8217;t always have a handle on how they talk to people. That way when you go back and relive the experience, instead of judging yourself an idiot, you can just write off the incident as your second grade teacher having an episode of less than appropriate behavior, for whatever reason. Maybe she backed over her cat on her way out of the driveway that morning. Whatever works. Your brain is pretty cool, and when you start to play around with it, you&#8217;ll find that you can do much more than you think you can.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>What Is Your Reference Point?</h3>
<p>I remember this story I read once in a book on communication. The story goes like this:</p>
<p>And old guy was sitting at edge of a small town out in the old west. He saw a horse and wagon, pulling a family of four. They stopped, and greeted the stranger.</p>
<p>&#8220;So, tell me, how are the people in this town?&#8221; They asked.<br />
&#8220;Well, how were the people in your old town?&#8221; The stranger replied.<br />
&#8220;Oh, they were pretty nice. Friendly, always willing to lend a hand.<br />
The stranger smiled.<br />
&#8220;Well, that sounds like the people in this town.&#8221; He said. The family thanked him and rode past toward there new home.</p>
<p>A few minutes later he saw another horse and wagon, pulling another family. They two were moving into town.<br />
&#8220;So, tell me, how are the people in this town?&#8221; They asked.<br />
&#8220;Well, how were the people in your old town,&#8221; the stranger replied.<br />
&#8220;Oh, not so good. Always sticking their noses in where they didn&#8217;t belong, gossiping, always waiting for you to make a mistake so they could take advantage of you.&#8221;<br />
&#8220;Hmm.&#8221; The stranger said, shaking his head.<br />
&#8220;I&#8217;m afraid you&#8217;ll find people in this town the same way.&#8221; They thanked him, and rode toward their new home.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a powerful method of goal setting, or rather goal getting, called the solutions focus. In it, you take whatever goal you are aiming at, and periodically do an inventory of what you&#8217;ve done so far. You rate yourself on a scale of one to ten, ten meaning your goal has already been achieved, and you are enjoying the results, while one is you haven&#8217;t even started yet.</p>
<p>Whatever number you give yourself, then you ask yourself why that number, and not a lower number. Even if you gave yourself a 1.5 rather than a 1, ask yourself why. This forces you to come up with all the positive things you&#8217;ve done recently that have moved you toward your goal.</p>
<p>The next step is to figure out what small steps you cold take to get you from a 1.5 to 2.</p>
<p>This is called the solutions focus because you force yourself to focus on what you are doing right, rather than what is standing in your way.</p>
<p>In the story above, the family that found the previous town filled with happy friendly people were likely to find the same in the new town, not because an objective measurement would show their previous town as filled with happy, smiling people but because they were the kind of people that seemed to find the good in others.</p>
<p>The second family, by comparison, even though they were going to the same town, would likely find only pettiness and unfriendliness, because that is what they look for. If you look for crap, that&#8217;s all you&#8217;ll find. But if you look for treasure, you&#8217;ll likely find that as well.</p>
<p>There are plenty of good metaphors and stories that illustrate this point.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also a pretty good exercise to give yourself a lot more resources that you think you have.  Here&#8217;s how.</p>
<p>Think of a skill you&#8217;d like to develop, or one that you don&#8217;t think that you have. Then relax a bit, put yourself into a comfortable position, and take an inventory of your life history, and look for any evidence of when you&#8217;ve already exhibited this skill you are aiming to develop.</p>
<p>For example, if you want to become a good public speaker, just find all the times in your history that you spoke in front of others. Any time since you can remember from your earliest childhood memories are fine. And any public communication is fine. Yelling, screaming, singing, any time you spoke out in public and effectively got any point across.</p>
<p>Now whenever you think to the future, and any potential public speaking engagements you may be involved in, force your mind to those times in the past when you&#8217;ve already done what you are planning to do. When you do this enough times, your brain will start to see public speaking as something that&#8217;s normal and natural for you, and not something that is strange and terrifying, as it is for most people.</p>
<p>Like it or not, your past does influence your future. But there are so many ways to interpret your past, so many different memories and events that you were part of, that you can literally take any event, and spin it any way you like to support any future you&#8217;d like to create. Of course, there are some limits. For example, I&#8217;d have hard time finding some past experience that supported my goal of being able to slam dunk a basketball. It just ain&#8217;t gonna happen. But I would be able to vastly improve my outside shooting, my free throws, and any other part of the game that wasn&#8217;t wholly dependent on my height and my vertical jumping capability.</p>
<p>As much as we&#8217;d like to believe, we aren&#8217;t psychic. We can&#8217;t predict the future. But we can make reasonable assumptions on how things are going to turn out based on what happened in the past. And when you can choose which part of your past to reference, and how to interpret it, you give yourself a lot more flexibility.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>How To Build a Mental Time Machine</h3>
<p>There was this really cool movie called &#8220;The Butterfly Effect,&#8221; that came out a few years ago. They made a sequel that was OK, but not nearly as powerful as the original. The reason it was called &#8220;The Butterfly Effect,&#8221; was because of part of something called &#8220;Chaos Theory.&#8221; The name, of course is a misnomer, as Chaos means behaving without any set of rules. The chaos in Chaos theory though refers to not having any discernable rules or observable cause/effect phenomenon.</p>
<p>The weather is a great example of Chaos Effect in action. There are many different variables, and they are all strongly interactive. A change here, will effect a change there, which will in turn affect a change over, which will cause a change back here, and so on. Because we humans have a fairly limited capacity when it comes to having instincts for multi variable systems, it appears chaotic and impossible to describe even using our best computes. That&#8217;s why when they predict the rain, they give percentages rather than absolutes. No matter how sophisticated our machines and computers get, due to the nature of the system, we still have to guess about the weather.</p>
<p>The term &#8220;Butterfly Effect&#8221; refers to a butterfly flapping it&#8217;s wings on one side of the planet, and the effect rippling through the complex interactive meteorological system, and eventually causing a hurricane on the other side of the world.</p>
<p>It was also alluded to in a story by Ray Bradbury, where a group of scientists created a time machine. They were getting set to go on their first mission, but they were strongly admonished not to interact at all with anything they saw in the past, as it would have an unknown effect in the future. So they went back in time, and were looking around. One of the scientists saw a butterfly, and decided to collect it. This of course, violated the rules of &#8220;non interaction.&#8221;  When they returned to the present, everything was vastly changed, language, society, government, everything. One butterfly changed the entire future.</p>
<p>There was even an episode of the Simpson&#8217;s where Homer had a time machine, and they kept trying to come back to the normal present, but kept messing up. In one particular future they came back to, it was raining donuts, but they had big tongues like lizards.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve seen the movie, &#8220;The Butterfly Effect,&#8221; you know it follows the same pattern. The character can go back in time and relive part of his past, and when he comes back to the present, everything is changed. Every time he comes back, everything seems good, until he discovers something horribly wrong, and he has to go back and change something again.</p>
<p>While that is only a movie, and the idea of a butterfly causing a hurricane on the other side of the planet is largely metaphorical for the complex interactions in nature, there actually is a way to go back and change part of your past.</p>
<p>The way we are today, our behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs about our capabilities are based largely on what we have experienced and how we remember our past. While this is horrible news if you come with a bunch of baggage from an unpleasant or abusive childhood, it doesn&#8217;t have to be that way.</p>
<p>This is because our past is not really as solid as we think. Our own personal histories are based much more on our interpretation of events rather than the events themselves. If we can go back and somehow give a different interpretation to the events of the past, we can change our present.</p>
<p>Some people can do this pretty easy in the present. They&#8217;ll be walking down the street, bump into somebody, get cussed out, and simply write it off as the other guy having a bad day, without taking personal offense. The same is possible with our past, even though it&#8217;s already happened.</p>
<p>When we were kids, we didn&#8217;t have a lot of resources or a lot of experience, so there were only so many ways we could respond to bad things that happened to us. We didn&#8217;t have the adult experience to write it off as somebody simply having a bad day, as the example above.</p>
<p>If you have a particularly painful memory from the past, here&#8217;s a great way to &#8220;re program&#8221; your history.</p>
<p>Sit back, relax, and close your eyes. Drift back to that &#8220;event&#8221; that is still causing you problems today. Watch the event unfold. Watch it again, but freeze the frame every so often, and look at the other people involved in the event with a more adult, forgiving attitude. Maybe they just didn&#8217;t know any better. Maybe they were expressing their own pain the best way they could. Give them the benefit of the doubt as much as you can. Remember the wise words of Nelson Mandela: &#8220;Holding a grudge is like swallowing poison and hoping the other person dies.&#8221;</p>
<p>Stay dissociated, that is, watch the event unfolding, as if you are some kind of ghost from the future watching it unfold. After you&#8217;ve given as much adult understand as you can to all the players involved, watch it again, but this time, step in and interact with your child self. Explain to your child self who you are (yourself from the future) and what is really going on. Tell them whatever all the other people are doing, it&#8217;s nothing personal. Make sure your child self understand.</p>
<p>Now for the cool part. Go back and relive that experience, but this time as associated as you can. Float into your child&#8217;s body, but this time, really feel and experience your future self giving you guidance and support as the event unfolds. As a child, listen to the advice of your future self. Run through this several times.</p>
<p>This may seem awkward, and perhaps even emotionally painful at first, but just like with any other exercise, you&#8217;ll get better with practice. Pretty soon you&#8217;ll be able blink yourself back into your past, and re organize your responses to what happened, and give yourself a much brighter future. Just like Richard Bandler, the co founder of NLP said, &#8220;It&#8217;s never too late to have a happy childhood.&#8221;</p>

<p>Do you have any irrational fears? Would you like to easily and quickly get rid of them? Here I&#8217;ll give you the basic recipe for the famous NLP ten-minute phobia cure. This is one of the oldest and most widely taught NLP &#8220;procedure,&#8221; and is used to give immediate relief to any irrational fears of things like spiders, clowns and red heads.</p>
<p>To understand how this works, it helps to understand how the mind is set up to perceive and categorize &#8220;reality,&#8221; all that stuff we notice around us all the time.</p>
<p>One of the powerful functions of the brain is to generalize. When you were about two years old, or younger, you learned how to open a door. You figured out, either on your own or with the help of a parent or sibling, that if you grab that knobby looking thing, and twisted it, the door would open. As soon as you figured that, you could open pretty much any door in the world, providing it wasn&#8217;t locked.</p>
<p>Even if all the knobs were of different shapes and colors, your brain would recognize them as a door, with a knob. To open it, you fiddle with the knob somehow, usually turning it, and the door would open.</p>
<p>This is great when learning new things and being able to consistently increase your skills, as you get older, but it doesn&#8217;t help much when you start to deal with fears and anxieties.  Back before we lived in cities, this was very helpful when we needed to be worried about getting eaten by tigers or falling off cliffs, but jumping out of our skin if we see a spider on the dashboard of our cars isn&#8217;t a particularly useful response.</p>
<p>There are few fears that are programmed into our brains. Heights and loud noises are considered to be our only pre-programmed fears, but many evolutionary psychologists are starting to believe that we also may be genetically set to fear snakes.</p>
<p>So if there if you have an irrational fear that isn&#8217;t a loud noise, heights or maybe a snake, there was likely a time in your life when you weren&#8217;t afraid of that, whatever it was. Then something happened, and you learned to be afraid of it, just like you learned to open the door.  Just like you were able to generalize to all doors, now all things, like that one thing you are afraid of, will produce the same response of jumping out of your skin.</p>
<p>The trick is to go back in time, and mess with your memory of what&#8217;s called the initial sensitizing event.  So pick something that you&#8217;re afraid of, that you would rather not be. Got it? Good.</p>
<p>Now think back to the very first time you remember being afraid of that.</p>
<p>The next part you&#8217;ll need to do with your eyes closed, so read through this and try it when you&#8217;re finished.</p>
<p>Imagine that you are sitting in a movie theater, way in the back. The theater is empty, except for one person sitting up in the front row. That other person is you. So in your imagination, you are watching yourself, watching a movie. Or about to watch a movie.</p>
<p>Ok, now you can start the movie. The movie is that first time you became afraid of that thing, or the first time you remember being afraid of that thing. Watch yourself watching the movie, the whole way through.</p>
<p>Now watch it again, but change it up a little bit. Make everybody in the movie wear really goofy looking party hats, including any animals or insects that may be involved. Make everybody ride a unicycle, while juggling. Put a goofy soundtrack to it. Rum through the movie several times, adding some complete nonsense each time.</p>
<p>After you&#8217;ve done that a few times, run the movie backwards. Then forwards, then backwards. Do this several times.</p>
<p>What this is doing is taking that initial event, and instead of having fear so your only response, you now can choose laughter, boredom, and entertainment, whatever you want. You will no longer be forced to automatically feel fear when you encounter that &#8220;thing&#8221; in everyday life.</p>
<p>A way to check and see how well this is to stop, and imagine that &#8220;thing&#8221; happening now. Does it still have the same fearful effect? If so, run through the movie a few more times, and add in as much nonsense as you can. I once did this with a friend, and he had me turn my movie into a midget clown porno. After that it was impossible for me to experience that &#8220;thing&#8221; without laughing my head off.</p>

<p>Once there was this old lady that owned this shop. She had worked there for a long time. Many years ago she had opened the shop with her husband, and would have supported him in any endeavor, provided it made enough sense. Back in those days it was considered quite a rebellious act to go against the status quo and start your own business from scratch, rather than to either follow in your fathers footsteps or to work for a large company.  So in that respect, the particular business wasn&#8217;t her particular choice, but it had made sense at the time, and had made enough money to live a comfortable life, so she supported him all the way.</p>
<p>He, of course, passed away several years ago from various complications. She had been running the shop on her own for a number of years, due to his growing illness. So it was just natural that when he passed on, she would continue to do so. Sometimes, though, she wondered what would have happened had she not made the choices she did. She did have a decent life, several children, and grandchildren, all grown up and moved out. Having the shop kept her fairly busy, and there were plenty of times she wished that she had husband that had more a traditional business or work, one that wouldn&#8217;t require her support. She never shared these thoughts with others, for fear of coming across as ungrateful.</p>
<p>There was another choice, back in the day. When her husband had started courting her, there were also several others, of which only one was a serious contender in any measure. When it had come down to it, had they both proposed, she would have had a hard time deciding, but as things happened, her husband (obviously) was the first to propose, and back in those days, when an eligible suitor proposed, you just didn&#8217;t say no.</p>
<p>But she did allow herself to wonder sometimes. What would have happened if? If the other one had asked her first. He was being groomed to take over his fathers business, which was very large and very well established.  She would have undoubtedly had a much easier life, and much more time to participate in high society affairs like watching the polo matches and such. But she never allowed herself to think those thoughts for very long, the mind seems to feed upon itself whether you wish you would have done things differently as well as when you appreciate your life for whatever it has brought you.</p>
<p>She was standing there, daydreaming like this, in her shop, when the strange gentlemen entered.</p>
<p>&#8220;Afternoon,&#8221; he said, tipping his hat. Strange, she thought, men hardly wear hats any more, let alone tip them to lonely old women in shops.<br />
&#8220;What can I do for you?&#8221; she politely asked.<br />
&#8220;Well, let me see,&#8221; he said pulling out a list. He looked at it briefly, and then handed it to her.<br />
&#8220;Would you by chance have any of these?&#8221; he asked pleasantly.<br />
She studied the list.<br />
&#8220;Why yes, I think we have all of these items,&#8221; She said, leading him through the shop.<br />
&#8220;You don&#8217;t remember me, do you?&#8221; He asked.<br />
She paused, looking at him. He seemed quite young.<br />
&#8220;I&#8217;m sorry, I can&#8217;t say that I do.&#8221; She said, more than a little bit curious.<br />
&#8220;That&#8217;s OK, most people don&#8217;t. At least they like to pretend so.&#8221;<br />
She wasn&#8217;t sure what she meant. She set the basket of items next to the register, and began to ring them up. It was still the same cash register from when the shop originally opened. When she was about halfway finished, he reached out, putting his hand on hers. It was ice cold. She unconsciously recoiled, and then was ashamed for her rudeness.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m sorry, I…&#8221; she began.<br />
&#8220;It&#8217;s ok.&#8221; He paused, waiting for her to understand. She looked him in his eyes, which betrayed a confidence and quiet determination well beyond his apparent years.<br />
He reached out, one more and extended his hand. He held his hand as they did back in the day when polo matches were all the rage, and men and women both wore different hats for different occasions.<br />
She understood.</p>
<p>&#8220;Is this how it ends?&#8221; She asked? More than a little nervous.<br />
&#8220;Don&#8217;t worry. We’ll be there before you know it.&#8221;<br />
&#8220;There?&#8221; She said, suddenly confused, worried, terror stricken.<br />
&#8220;You&#8217;ll see.&#8221; He said, smiling.</p>
<p>Finally, she reached out, and took his hand.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>Why It&#8217;s Ok To Lose Your Way</h3>
<p>Once there was a group of birds. They were the kind of birds that migrated quite a long distance every year. They crossed oceans, rivers, mountains, and large flat areas that took several days to cross. They would instinctively leave their homes once the cold air of the winter signaled it was time for their departure. Once they arrived in the warmer areas, the boys and girls would hook up and make baby birds. Of course birds don’t pop right out fully formed, like people do.</p>
<p>They are not quite done when they come out, they need a little bit more work. So they finish cooking in the next inside their protective shell. When they are ready to face the world, they break out of their shells, and start to make noises. Usually these noises mean, &#8220;Give me food!&#8221; but sometimes they just like to make noise. It&#8217;s fun to learn to do things and watch how the world reacts to you.</p>
<p>Then, if all goes well, when everybody can fly on their own, and not get lost, they all pack up their stuff and head back home when the weather starts to warm up.</p>
<p>Now here is the curious part. While they&#8217;ve been studying the migration patterns of birds for quite some time, they aren&#8217;t exactly sure how they remember how to go back and forth. Some argue that because many birds make the same trip several times in their lifetime, they follow others the first time, and then remember if from there. But that would mean that bird have some kind of long term memory. While possible, some argue that that is unlikely. Another problem with that theory is that after the new birds are hatched and learn to fly, they can find their way back &#8220;home.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important to remember that &#8220;home&#8221; is sometimes several thousand miles away, and over various different terrains. How in the world do the baby birds know where to go? The most accepted theory is that they follow all the grownups.</p>
<p>But if you are like me, I can ride along shotgun with somebody several times and not remember how to get there. The idea that birds that get it right the first time on their own is mind-boggling.</p>
<p>But however it works out, this story is about one small bird who had some troubles his first couple of trips. His first trip was no problem. He just stuck with his group, did what he was told, and got back to his home (for the first time) safely. The next year came, and it was time to return and mate and nest.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s when the problem started. He was the kind of bird that was easily sidetracked. He couldn&#8217;t really focus on where he was supposed to end up. He kept noticing all the scenery around him. Several times he would be watching the hills rolling below him, only to look up and find that he was all alone. This panicked him, of course, and he flew as fast he could until he could see his group. Usually he found them within a couple of days, but sometimes he flew for several days without seeing anybody. This was terribly distressing for him. He would always chastise himself for being so stupid, and not paying attention.</p>
<p>When he finally caught up with the group, he felt happy again, and forget his mistakes. But then a couple days later, the same thing would happen. He&#8217;d be lazily watching the scenery pass by, and lose his way again. And the would yell and curse himself for being stupid, fly around in all directions out of fear for a few days until he caught up with group again.</p>
<p>Finally they arrived at their winter home. He, like all the other male birds, found a suitable female and knocked her up. When the eggs came, he started feeling a deep, gnawing fear in the pit of his belly. As they day of the great hatching came closer, the fear became bigger and bigger. One of the older birds noticed this and came over to speak with him.</p>
<p>&#8220;What seems to be troubling you?&#8221;<br />
&#8220;I don’t know. This just doesn&#8217;t seem fun any more.&#8221;<br />
&#8220;What doesn&#8217;t?&#8221;<br />
&#8220;This whole thing,&#8221; he said motioning to all the expectant mothers sitting on their eggs.<br />
&#8220;I mean,&#8221; he continued, &#8220;what if I get lost again, and people are following me? We could all die.&#8221;<br />
The old bird paused.<br />
&#8220;I suppose you could,&#8221; he finally said.<br />
The young bird looked at him, his fear growing.<br />
&#8220;Do you remember how you got here?&#8221; The old bird asked.<br />
&#8220;Well, I remember when I got lost, and all the places I tried to find the group, and ..&#8221;<br />
&#8220;No.&#8221; The old bird cut him off.<br />
&#8220;How did you get here? Not how did you get lost. How did you get here? What do you remember?&#8221;<br />
The young bird stopped, thinking. Suddenly his mind flashed with all the landmarks when he was overcome with joy at being reunited with the flock. He suddenly understood.<br />
&#8220;All those points. Of course. Just go from one of those points to the next. It seems so easy now.&#8221;<br />
&#8220;That&#8217;s the secret,&#8221; the old bird said, smiling (insomuch as birds can smile).<br />
&#8220;You have a memory filled with many different events. Some are bad, some are good. Simply focus on the good memories, and you will always remember your way.&#8221;<br />
&#8220;Will he lose his way?&#8221; the young bird asked, motioning towards his young sons and daughters, still wrapped in their protective shells.<br />
&#8220;We all lose our way.&#8221; The old bird said.<br />
&#8220;That is the only way we can learn.&#8221;</p>
<p>With that he flew off, and the young bird never felt fear again.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>How To Apply The Secrets Of Alien Abductees</h3>
<p>Many years ago, I used to be an avid reader of fiction. My bookcase at home would be filled with all kinds of books, usually paperbacks that I would buy and tear through in a weekend.  I would come home from work, and instead of sitting in front of the TV or a few hours, like most people do, I would sit in front a novel for a few hours. Not that one is better than the other. They both serve the same purpose, namely, a temporary escape from reality through a powerfully engaging story that captures and leads your imagination away from whatever daily crud you deal with on a regular basis.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s interesting when you think about stories, and story telling. In some form, story telling has been around since humankind learned to speak. And it survives today in various forms. I have no idea how big of an industry it is, although I doubt that you could even categorize all the different forms of story telling in the same group. Books, movies, plays, TV shows, operas. The list goes on and on.</p>
<p>I can imagine what it was like thousands of years ago. The guys would go out hunting, or searching for food. The gals would hang out near wherever their home was, taking care of the kids, searching for roots and other edible plants.</p>
<p>Then they&#8217;d get together at night, sit around a fire, and there would inevitably be a few people that were good at spinning tales. Perhaps they were embellished from actual hunts that were significant, or maybe they were stories past on from previous generations.</p>
<p>One can see how certain elements would creep into them, the sun, the moon, and the various weather patterns. I imagine that some of the stories told at night had social and cultural significance, while other stories were told purely for comic relief. Very similar to what you see on TV today.</p>
<p>That humans have retained our basic tastes in stories and how we use them in conjunction with our imaginations in order to remove ourselves temporarily from the daily stresses of life never ceases to amaze me.</p>
<p>I started out by saying that I used to read novels. I don&#8217;t them so much any more. I tend to read non-fiction. I like reading personal development books, and books that border on philosphy/psychology. I&#8217;m particular interested in books pertaining to human evolution and how it has shaped our current mindset.</p>
<p>On interesting passage I came across recently in a book I was reading about reframing was a procedure in creating a new history for yourself.</p>
<p>Just as the stories described above make extensive use of your imagination, this procedure does the same.  But instead of somebody else&#8217;s imagined story, this method can be used to recreate your own story.</p>
<p>This sounds strange at first. Most people feel that their history is their history. You can&#8217;t change what happened to in the past.  While you can&#8217;t change the actual events, you can certainly change your interpretation of them. And you can choose which events you automatically remember when you enter into a familiar situation.</p>
<p>For example, if you are terrified of public speaking, every time you even think about public speaking, you will remember all the times that you experienced emotional discomfort or pain whenever you expressed yourself in a public setting. This includes all instances, even back to when you were three and your mom told you to shut up while you were in line at the supermarket, even if you don&#8217;t consciously remember that happening.</p>
<p>The power of re creating your history is two-fold. First, you can change your interpretation to the events that happened. Second, you can change which events you use as your reference points as you look toward the future.</p>
<p>So you can either go into your history, and re interpret all the events where you tried to express yourself, but were shut down by others. Instead of remembering them as painful experiences, you can remember them as simple feedback from the environment.  Maybe you were told to shut up at the supermarket because your mom was trying to talk to somebody. So instead of giving the event the meaning of &#8220;public speaking is scary&#8221; you should give the event the meaning of &#8220;when public speaking, be careful not to interrupt others, or they&#8217;ll get mad,&#8221; or something like that.</p>
<p>What makes this possible is the fact that our memories are not set in stone. Our memories are completely malleable, when can give them any meaning we want.<br />
Even our memories of the actual events themselves are suspect, as any good defense lawyer will tell you. If all a prosecutor has is eyewitness testimony, he or she will have a very weak case. The law recognizes that human memory, even recent memory, is highly suspect.</p>
<p>The second thing you can do with this procedure is simply choose different events to remember. Choose events where you expressed yourself in public and everything went ok. This means singing at birthday parties, giving a recital that went ok, or anything else you can imagine.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s another secret. If you can&#8217;t remember any positive experiences of expressing yourself in public, make them up. That&#8217;s right. You can make up some examples in your history of you doing things that you want to be able to easily do in the future. Don&#8217;t think this is possible? Just ask anybody that is convinced they were abducted by aliens.</p>
<p>In order to do this procedure, simply think of something you&#8217;d like to do. Relax and imagine yourself drifting through your past, and look for any events that are similar to your current goal. Change those events around by changing the meaning, and put in positive events if you can&#8217;t find any real ones. Do this until you get five or six events that are a positive memory of you doing something that you&#8217;d like to do in the future.</p>
<p>Then any time you think of doing that thing, just purposely recall your five or sex &#8220;created&#8221; memories. It may take a few times, but pretty soon you&#8217;ll be recalling those &#8220;created&#8221; positive memories automatically, and your future will look brighter than ever.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;ve ever felt the need for a sudden burst, of creativity, then this article is for you. I&#8217;ll show you how you can dig through the seemingly limitless resources in your mind to come up with such wildly creative ideas people will think you are a naturally gifted genius.</p>
<p>Scientists are always being surprised by the complexities and depth of the human mind. Just as they are beginning to scratch the surface, they continue to be amazed at the sheer processing power of the brain. If all the computers of the world were connected together, and tasked with &#8220;thinking&#8221; about one singular problem, they wouldn&#8217;t come close to the power of one human brain.</p>
<p>The structure of the human brain is thought to be of a lattice structure, with nodes connecting to several nodes, each of which are connected to several other nodes. What this does is create a structure where one &#8220;thought&#8221; or memory stored at one node has a seemingly infinite connection to every other &#8220;thought&#8221; or memory through the connection of only a couple other nodes.</p>
<p>Similar in nature to the theory of Six Degrees of Separation, which states that every human on earth is connected to every other human through no less than six people. For example, you know somebody, that knows somebody, that has met the Pope. And the Pope, of course, has met most of the world&#8217;s leaders. You therefore have about three or four degrees of separation between all of the world&#8217;s leaders.</p>
<p>The brain works in a similar fashion. One thought or memory is connected to several others directly, which in turn is connected to several others. Pretty soon every thought can easily be connected to every other thought through only three or four nodes.</p>
<p>When you can harness this idea towards creative thought, you can virtually become genius. The key is to focus on your outcome, and let your mind roam until you find a solution. With practice, you&#8217;ll be able to do this within a few seconds, silently, and come up with a solution to almost any problem on the spot. This works great for brainstorming sessions at work.</p>
<p>The way to get started is to simply practice letting your mind wander. One simple way is to create an ABC list of several different items, with each list constrained to a specific category. For example, one list may be of musical instruments, starting with each letter of the alphabet. (Don&#8217;t worry; you can cheat if you need to.) For example A = &#8220;A guitar&#8221;, B= &#8220;Bongo drums&#8221;, C = &#8220;Clarinet,&#8221; and so on.</p>
<p>Another list may be food. So A is apple, B is banana, C is Candy, etc.</p>
<p>Once you have your lists, just pick a letter, and start writing about anything that comes to mind regarding whatever to item&#8217;s you&#8217;ve selected. It might feel strange and clunky at first, but you&#8217;ll get the hang of it pretty quickly. It&#8217;s best to use some kind of word processor, and just type away without concern for spelling or grammar.</p>
<p>If you do this for five minutes a day, you&#8217;ll be giving your brain a tremendous workout, and will be strengthening your lateral thinking ability. Once you get the hang of it, you can start problem solving. Simply choose one word that describes your problem, and use the first letter of that word to select items from your various ABC lists. Then just start free associating, starting with whatever items you&#8217;ve chosen.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll be amazed how quickly you will come up with a solution to your problem seemingly out of nowhere.  The trick is to be open and not censor yourself. When you get that &#8220;aha&#8221; feeling, you know you&#8217;ve arrived.</p>
<p>For example, let&#8217;s say you work at a manufacturing company, and you are having a problem with shipping. So you choose S, and look at your two ABC lists, and choose Saxophone, and Sandwich. (S instrument, and S food). Just start brainstorming away, using the two S words as your seeds, and see where you brain takes you.  Just keep associating, and follow along wherever your brain takes you, and you&#8217;ll have a solution in no time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I knew this guy once that was really good at reading lips. He had some long convoluted story about he learned that particular skill. I had nothing to do with being deaf or knowing anybody that was deaf. I think he was just the kind of guy that would study up on strange skills that most people wouldn&#8217;t normally think to learn.</p>
<p>Like this one guy considered himself an expert in predicting how much daylight was left while looking at the sun. He would always impress whoever he was with by looking at the sun, checking how many fingers he could hold up at arm&#8217;s length between the horizon and the sun&#8217;s lower edge. He could usually predict the exact time; to the second the sun&#8217;s last visible part would dip below the horizon.</p>
<p>Kind of like that episode of Star Trek where they landed on some planet and the flowers had some weird chemical that made the crew members go wacky. Spock lost all of his logic, and for the first time, expressed awe at the beauty of a rainbow. He said something along the lines of &#8220;I could explain to you in precise scientific detail why that occurs, but I feel it would take away from its beauty.&#8221;</p>
<p>So this guy would usually sit in restaurants and entertain whoever he was with by looking around the room the tell us whatever people were talking about. At first it seemed kind of like we were in on some secret CIA spy stuff, then we then realized that most of the stuff people talk about while they are at a restaurant is kind of boring.</p>
<p>Of course, every once in a while you might find an interesting conversation, but nothing really worth anything. We never got any inside information on a hot stock or a horse that was sure thing. The closest we got was the kind of juicy gossip you see on a soap opera.</p>
<p>I suppose it&#8217;s like those guys in New York that buy telescopes to look out there windows into other peoples living rooms. I suppose most of the time it&#8217;s pretty boring. Perhaps once in a while you might get lucky and see a murder, like in &#8220;Rear Window,&#8221; or maybe a porno being shot, but most of the time it&#8217;s just some dude, or a couple sitting around watching TV.</p>
<p>Of course the real fun begins when you find that somebody is watching you, while you are sitting there reading this. Is there somebody behind you?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you ever been talking to somebody, and halfway through the conversation, you suddenly realize that you&#8217;ve completely forgotten their name?  Maybe you looked around and hoped you would see somebody that knew them, so you could later ask what their name was. Or maybe you lost track of the conversation completely as you racked your brain trying to remember their name.</p>
<p>Of course, the worse thing that could happen is that a friend joins the conversation, and you are suddenly on the spot of making the socially required introductions. You can either admit you&#8217;ve forgotten their name, and look foolish, or you can ignore the introductions and hope they introduce themselves, and look rude.  Either way, forgetting somebody&#8217;s name is an almost certain way to put you into a bind.</p>
<p>Luckily, because you are reading this you are about to discover how to remember names so that you will never find yourself in an uncomfortable position again. And one cool thing about this trick is that it can be applied to any situating where you need to remember important facts or details, and it wouldn&#8217;t be appropriate to write them down.</p>
<p>Before I explain the simple trick, one important, and often misunderstood concept about memory needs to be addressed. Remembering things, names, places, dates, etc, is not a passive process.  You have to make a conscious choice, combined with conscious mental action if you want to remember anything, at least at first. Just like riding a bicycle, once you get the hang of it, you can do it without thinking.</p>
<p>Memory is no different. If you are having problems now, you can take simple steps that consciously remember things, just like you had to remember to hold the handle bars and pedal and steer so you wouldn&#8217;t crash into things or fall over. But just as you soon were able to ride a bike without thinking, you will soon be able to remember things without thinking.</p>
<p>The idea behind this is called pegging. A peg it simply something you hang something. Physically a peg is something on wall that many people use to hang their keys on, so they won&#8217;t forget where they are. You can do the same with names.</p>
<p>The idea is to make a decision that you want to remember their name before you get it from them. It may seem cumbersome at first, but once you get the hang of it will be second nature.</p>
<p>The trick is to give somebody a name before you meet them. And not just any name, something specific about the way they look, or walk or talk. The key here is to be as humorous, demeaning, politically incorrect as possible. This is ok, because you won&#8217;t be sharing this name with anybody. Then when you hear their name, you will need to connect their actual name in some way with the politically incorrect name you gave them before.</p>
<p>This requires a bit of mental flexibility, as you will need to take their name and create a mental picture of something associated with that name.</p>
<p>For example. Let&#8217;s say you are at a party, and you see somebody you might meet. You look at him, and he has a big nose. So right away you think of him as &#8220;Mr. Big Nose.&#8221; (Remember, you aren&#8217;t going to share this with anybody). Then when you hear his name, you create a picture based on his name, and attach it to &#8220;Mr. Big Nose&#8221; in your mind.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s say his name is Mike. You can think of a microphone, and imagine a cluster of microphones dangling from his nose. Or lets say his name is Dave. You can think of a wave (rhymes with Dave) and imagine a giant thirty-foot tsunami exploding from is nostrils. Or if his name is George, you can imagine either the monkey, curious George, playing his hose, or George of the Jungle, swinging on vine from his nose, or George Washington, and imagine a cluster of rolled up one dollar bills stuck in his nose.</p>
<p>This may seem like a lot of work, but you&#8217;ll be surprised how quickly you can master this. You can practice this a couple ways. One way is to look online for baby names, and practice thinking of pictures to associate with common names you might hear. And when you are out in public, like at Starbucks or wherever, you can practice giving people politically incorrect names like &#8220;Mr. Big Nose,&#8221; or &#8220;Mr. Blue Shirt,&#8221; or &#8220;Miss Big Hair,&#8221; or &#8220;Miss on sale shoes,&#8221; or whatever.  You will only need to practice this a couple of times before you get really good at it.</p>
<p>If you need motivation, just imagine what it will be like when people think of you as the person that always remembers people&#8217;s names. And when you realize that remembering somebody&#8217;s name is the absolute best way to make an impression, you&#8217;ll also really increase your popularity.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I remember when I was a kid there was an amusement park I would go to. It wasn&#8217;t a huge amusement park like Disneyland or anything, it was one of those small, local ones that some cities have near beaches. They had a few rides that were ok, if you were a kid. Sometimes I wonder how those places can get insurance with all the questionable people they have working there. I don&#8217;t think I remember ever seeing somebody working there that seemed like a person you see working someplace else, like at the grocery store or your local coffee shop or something. The kind of person that gets to know you and what you buy or order or whatever.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve ever seen a person like this outside of their your normal meeting place it&#8217;s always kind of weird. You either don&#8217;t recognize them, and wonder where you know them from, or you recognize them, but you both feel kind of awkward because you are away from your normal comfortable meeting place. Maybe I&#8217;m paranoid, but sometimes the thought strikes and makes me wonder if all those times they are being friendly is because of their job or not.</p>
<p>One thing about this amusement park always scared me. It was the haunted house. I had only been inside twice when I was a kid, and both times scared the crap out of me. I only went in because my friends and I all dared each other. Of course I didn&#8217;t let on how scared I was, and I suppose my friends were all the same, to some extent. But I can&#8217;t forget how scared I was both times. The place was dark, you couldn&#8217;t see where you were going, it had this weird smell like an old doctors office that hadn&#8217;t been cleaned in a while, and there were these weird sounds that you couldn&#8217;t really tell where they were coming from. It seemed like no matter which way you were facing, the sounds seemed like they were behind you and getting closer by the second. I couldn&#8217;t get out of there quick enough. Probably the thing that terrified me the most was at one point I almost panicked, and had to leave, but I couldn&#8217;t find where the exit was. There were no exit lights anywhere, and all I could hear were those sounds like some old lady breathing right behind me, and everywhere I turned seemed to be a dead end. I almost fainted from shock.</p>
<p>One time used to hang out in this bookstore once a week, and it only took the people a couple weeks to realize that I ordered the same thing every week. Pretty soon when they saw me, whoever it was, they would just smile and say &#8220;large iced tea?&#8221; right away with raised eyebrows just to make sure. I remember seeing one of the girls that worked there in a total different environment, and before any of those uncertain feelings or questions came up, she said &#8220;large iced tea!&#8221; with a smile, instead of this time, saying it like a question, she said it like a statement of recognition. It took care of all my concerns in one fell swoop.</p>
<p>I visited my friend a couple weeks ago that lived in the town where they had that amusement park. I was sure that it would be torn down and replaced by affordable housing or something, but it was still there. Just for fun my friend and I went to that haunted house, and I&#8217;ll admit I was a bit nervous going in, but boy was I surprised.  It smelled like some incense you buy at a car wash, and the sound they had piped through was completely laughable. It sounded like some old woman who had been smoking for too long, but it was on this crappy loop that lasted only about four seconds, and kept repeating. There was an obvious gap when the tape repeated itself, which gave it an odd cartoonish feeling. And even though the exits weren&#8217;t marked where they normally would, because they had to have them noted by law, they had decided them to write them on the ground. So all you had to do was look down and see where the arrows were pointing to leave. The exit was never more than a few steps away. I couldn&#8217;t this pitiful haunted house had caused me so much fear earlier. I guess that&#8217;s what happens when you let your imagination run away with you.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As you are sitting there now, reading these words, feeling those feelings in that chair, you can begin to notice the sounds around you. And as you expand your awareness to the sounds around you, you might begin to notice certain sensations that you hadn&#8217;t noticed before. The feeling in your left leg, the feeling behind your right ear, the sensations on the bottom of your feet. And as you feel those sensations, and hear those sounds around you, you may begin to remember memories of things that happened before. Memories that you hadn&#8217;t remembered to think about until now. Happy memories, pleasant memories. You might begin to recall ideas you had from before that you hadn&#8217;t begun to follow through on yet. Ideas like this one, or that one, that seemed like a wonderful thing, a wonderful idea of something that you could do or say or express, and then somehow something else happened, and that wonderful idea went to the back of your mind, where it&#8217;s been waiting ever since, for you to come here and remember it.</p>
<p>One of the good things about memories is that the really good ones have a tendency to come out more often than others. Some of these disguise themselves as &#8220;bad&#8221; memories that you don&#8217;t want to think about. Like one day you&#8217;ll be doing something that you normally do every day, and one of &#8220;those&#8221; thoughts will pop into your head and you&#8217;ll realize after you&#8217;ve thought this thought for a few moments that it isn&#8217;t a particularly happy thought, and you wonder why it keeps running around and around in your head if you don’t like thinking it.</p>
<p>The reason I use the word &#8216;disguise&#8217; is because they are actually trying to help you in some way. Sometimes a thought will origin with the intention of pointing out something to you, and it will grab whatever metaphorical memories that it thinks will help you out the most. Often times these metaphorical memories are rather mysterious, and instead of looking for the underlying message, we tend to try and force the &#8216;bad&#8217; thought out of our minds.</p>
<p>I had a friend once that was a really spiritual person. She was always wearing different colored crystals and practicing different forms of meditation. I went to a lecture once with her of this guy that was some mystical guru from India. It was at this new age center downtown in the city I was living at the time. There were several very interesting people there, and they were all from different disciplines and areas of expertise. It was interesting because the guru from India gave his message using lots of metaphorical terms that could be use to apply to many different situations. After the lecture, we went out with a couple of her friends to a Pakistani restaurant nearby. It&#8217;s interesting when you find things are close by that you didn&#8217;t know before. Kind of like finding related things when you didn&#8217;t have any idea these things have anything to do with each other.</p>
<p>So while we were eating, one of her friends started telling me about his spiritual guide. Now as soon as he started talking about a spiritual guide, I was reminded of an interesting religious ceremony I witnessed once while in Taiwan. I was at friends house, which happened to be next door to a temple. My friend&#8217;s uncle owned the temple, and my friend and her family lived in the house. One of her older relatives (I think) stood in front of the alter at the temple, and then started mumbling a bunch of really incoherent speech, at least it was incoherent to me. My friend calmly explained that he was channeling entities from some other Buddhist plain of existence. I wasn&#8217;t sure what to think about this so I just kind of watched with interest. He went on like this for about ten minutes, until he finished and left.</p>
<p>So this guy says that when he communities with his spiritual guide, his guide sometimes gives him direct suggestions, and ideas. Other times his guide speaks only in pictures that sometimes takes him several days to understand. He says that everybody has a spiritual guide, even if they don&#8217;t know it. He said that most people&#8217;s spirit guides try and communicate to the person based on the person&#8217;s own belief system and upbringing. This where the Catholic Church got the idea of Guardian Angels (which is an official belief in the Catholic Catechism).<br />
He went on to say that the secret in correctly interpreting your spirit&#8217;s communication is to be open, and to trust your mind to come up with the right answer.</p>
<p>Which it&#8217;s good to always pay attention to your stray thoughts, because you never can be sure where they are coming from.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There has been a lot of talk in the media and in popular areas of discussion recently about the importance of happiness. Happiness is that elusive goal that you don&#8217;t really know how to define it, but you certainly can appreciate it when you have it. Many people have tried to define happiness in such a way as being measure by external circumstances. Money, Car, Friends, Relationships. Most people don&#8217;t realize that the path to happiness is an inside game. Of course, I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;re also aware that a solid inside game automatically leads to a fantastic outside reality. The mistake most people make, is that when they see an outside reality in somebody else&#8217;s life, they try to reproduce the outer effects, without realizing that you need to pay attention to the inside first, and the outside will naturally follow. One way to do this is to change your happiness set point.</p>
<p>One of the best way to increase your happiness set point is to <em>change the thoughts</em> that you habitually think. If this sounds confusing, don&#8217;t worry. It is actually fairly easy once you incorporate some easy habits into your daily life. Long term success is all about what you set up to do today, on a regular basis, so that your future will automatically come pre delivered the way you want it.</p>
<p>The first step in changing your habitual thoughts is to <em>become aware</em> of them. Most people amble through life, day after day, thinking the same thoughts over and over without really being aware of it. Because the brain is not only incredibly fast, but also incredibly efficient, there are thousands of thoughts that happen below the threshold of conscious awareness.</p>
<p>For example, when I was a kid, I was out riding my bike. I saw a big scary dog, that growled at me and showed me his big white sharp teeth, dripping with saliva he was no doubt hoping to use to digest my bones after he ate me. The standoff lasted for only a few seconds, but in my childhood mind, it seemed like an eternity. Now when I see a dog, my brain immediately notices that there is a dog in front of me. It then sorts through all my memories of dogs to determine the appropriate emotional response. When it finds that memory I described above, it comes back with the emotion of scary, danger, run away. This all happens so quickly that when I see a dog today, I seemingly immediately only notice a feeling of anxiety. I&#8217;m not aware that my brain is doing all that searching and deciding.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s only when I <em>unpack that memory</em>, and do some basic memory operation procedures to detach the unpleasantness from that memory of the dog from my current experience, that I can see a dog and <em>feel a sense of happiness</em> and safety, rather than anxiety and fear.</p>
<p>One way to look at your happiness set point is the sum total of your automatic responses to the environment that you encounter on a regular basis. If you are deathly afraid of snakes, and your next door neighbor has a pet boa constrictor that he takes out for a walk the same time as you every morning, you are not going to <em>have</em> a particularly <em>high happiness</em> set point.</p>
<p>What can be helpful, is to go back in time, in your mind, and change whatever memory is there that your brain uses as a reference to tell you to be afraid of snakes.</p>
<p>It sounds really bizarre, but it is pretty simple, and kind of fun when you can <em>learn to do it</em> fairly quickly. Here&#8217;s how I did it with my dog memory.</p>
<p>First thing I did was to go back and find the first memory of the dog. Because this can take some time, it may be the most cumbersome step. More practice will yield more memory dexterity, so don&#8217;t worry.</p>
<p>Next you tweak the heck out of the memory, so it doesn&#8217;t bother you any more. One way to do this, is to relive it, but change certain aspects of it. Like you can view it dissociated. That means that instead of being &#8220;in&#8221; the memory, I am actually watching myself have a showdown with the dog. And every time I relive that memory, I can change it. Like I can make the dog really small, with clown shoes on. Or I can make the dog dripping grape kool aid instead of child digesting saliva. Or I can have a flea circus performing on the dog&#8217;s back, complete with trapeze and the tiny clown fleas getting out of the even tinier clown flea VW bug.</p>
<p>And on top of all the above tricks, you can play the memory backwards, forwards, stuttered, black and white. You can even make the dog a person dressed in a dog costume. And the whole time I am doing this, I can imagine my adult self standing behind my child self, with my steady adult hand on my child shoulder, telling him how funny that dog looks.</p>
<p>I only had to do this a few times, before that memory lost it&#8217;s bite. (sorry.) And when you begin to go through your daily life, and systematically dig up and change memories that are giving you trouble, you can really start to raise up your happiness set point. Imagine what life will be like when ordinary objects that you see every day can give you feelings of hope and happiness instead of fear and anxiety.</p>
<p>After all, they are your thoughts. You can think them any way you want to.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you ever stopped to <em>realize</em> that <em>something</em> in your experience wasn&#8217;t exactly quite what you thought it was? An event or a situation that you interpreted one way, but as you <em>look back, </em>it takes on a new light?</p>
<p>For example, <em>think of something</em> in your past, something that happened, say five or ten years ago. And imagine as you were, just before that situation took place. And now imagine yourself as you were going through that situation. How does that feel? What do you see? What do you hear?</p>
<p>What meanings do you choose to give the events unfolding around you, now, as you remember what happened to you in your past? What was the one element of that experience that you chose to define it for you? Was it the way something appeared, or what somebody said, or something about the way somebody looked at you? Perhaps it was the way you felt afterwards?</p>
<p>For example, once I saw a guy talking into a mirror at the gym. He was standing really close, and he was really animated.  Talking with fluidly changing and almost chaotic facial expressions, arms flailing around. The meaning that I chose to give to that situation was that the guy was crazy. I could have given another meaning, since I really didn&#8217;t know what was going on, but that was my best, my quickest guess.</p>
<p>Now what happens if you take your earlier situation, and then move forward in time  a couple of years, or even right up until recently. Can you find another similarly structured situation, but with a completely different meaning that you decided to give it? What was different? Why was the second situation, which was similar to the first, different in the meaning that you gave it? Were there different, more familiar people involved? Was the setting more comfortable? Had the weather changed for the better?</p>
<p>In my situation, I saw another guy talking to himself in the mirror. I didn&#8217;t know him, but I surmised he was practicing for a performance, because he was standing outside of a theater that I go to sometimes. I saw two different guys, that I&#8217;d never met before doing the same thing, but I gave them two different meanings. One guy was loony, and one guy was a professional actor practicing his craft.</p>
<p>What was different for you?</p>
<p>One of the more interesting things about this, is that as you <em>increase your understanding</em> of your experience, and naturally <em>apply different realizations</em>, it follows that you can vastly <em>increase your potential</em> for flexibility in your perception. And when you can <em>apply this flexibility</em> in real-time, so you <em>discover different choices</em> for the meanings that you used to give automatically, your world will astoundingly <em>open up</em>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Drifting aimlessly. Meandering here and there. Wandering up and down, back and forth, left and right. Not traveling in any discernable direction. Seemingly without aim or purpose. Reacting, rather than acting. Reacting automatically to an environment that is as unpredictable as the earth is old. These are your thoughts. And unless you learn to control your thoughts, your thoughts will control you.</p>
<p>Unfortunately if you allow that to happen, which all too many people do, you place yourself under the control of a infinitely complex feedback loop to which you have no option other than follow blindly, and hope everything works out.  You know too well that it rarely does.</p>
<p>And the worse part is that those times when it doesn&#8217;t work out, although it seems like the responsibility lies outside your wonderfully developed mind-body biological system, in truth, the responsibility lies with you. And only you. I believe it was <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwBMVg9L7Q0" target="_blank">Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin that said it best</a>.</p>
<p>Of course, it doesn&#8217;t have to be that way. God, Mother Nature, the wonderfully random process of Darwinian Natural Selection, whoever or whatever it was that created you, didn&#8217;t <em>create</em> such a <em>magnificent collection</em> of cells and bones and muscles, and your fantastically powerful brain to just wander aimlessly through life.</p>
<p>You were created for a purpose, a reason, a destination. You are a missile with a highly sophisticated guidance system that scientiests are just now starting to understand. And known to only a few people, and <em>put into practice</em> by even fewer, is one of the easiest ways to <em>harness the</em> <em>awesome power</em> of your mind. To <em>develop the power of concentration</em>.</p>
<p>Remember when you were a kid, and you or some of your friends would play with a magnifying glass? You could take a very inexpensive magnifying glass, even one made of cheap plastic, and use it to focus the passive rays of the sun into incredible power. Power to burn, power to start fires. That power was harnessed by taking only a minuscule sliver of the suns total power and focusing it. The sun is a giant ball of fire, much bigger than the Earth fueled by the process of nuclear fusion, changing hydrogen atoms into helium atoms. One substance, one process, and enough energy to power an entire planet through eon after eon.</p>
<p>Your brain is infinitely more complex and intricate than that. Infinitely more rich. Infinitely more resourceful. The sun produces heat, and fire, and radiation. Your brain can <em>produce ideas</em>, which can turn into cities, art, cathedrals, poems, songs, equations. Whatever you can <em>imagine, you can create</em>. And you <em>have the power</em> to <em>focus yourself</em>.  Strengthen your mind so you <em>focus your thoughts</em> only on what supports and enlightens you. Focus your thoughts only on ideas that can <em>increase happiness</em> and abundance for you and those you love.</p>
<p>How to do that? How to <em>gain</em> that <em>elusive power</em> that through simple practice will give you an edge almost unheard of in today&#8217;s world?</p>
<p>Consistent practice. Opposite of the practice of meditation, in which you practice the emptying of your mind. To <em>practice focus</em>, think of an object. An apple. A bright red apple. Hold the thought in your mind of only an apple. Hold it for as long as you can. If you can hold it for five seconds, you&#8217;re doing pretty good. Practice whenever you get a chance. Red lights. In the bathroom. On the elevator. Decide to choose a thought, and hold only that thought for as long as you can.</p>
<p>When you can hold a simple thought, of a simple picture, move on to more complicated pictures. Ones containing a small amount of motion. A hummingbird floating next to a feeder. A clown juggling three bowling balls. A seal with a phone book balanced on its nose.</p>
<p>When you get good at that, you can move on to the next step. You&#8217;ll need to <em>prepare yourself</em> with five fantastic memories. If you ever <em>notice your thoughts</em> drifting to unhappy imaginations about the future, you can pull up your five happy memories, and force out the bad guys.</p>
<p>Start by remembering a happy memory from childhood. Really get into it. Close your eyes and easily allow yourself to float back into that memory. Really relive it. Relive it several times. Every time you relive this, put the memory into your left thumb. That&#8217;s right, put that wonderful memory into your left thumb. Use what you learned about pegging in the articles on <a href="http://www.georgehutton.net/wordpress/category/memory-skills/" target="_blank">memory</a> and associate that memory with your left thumb.</p>
<p>Do the same with your forefinger, middle finger, ring finger and pinky. Take your time. They don&#8217;t have to be childhood memories. Any good memory will do. Make sure it&#8217;s a strong, powerful memory. Sex, money, sports, anything that causes you to automatically <em>remember good feelings</em> will work.</p>
<p>You might need to practice a few times before it really sets. But after you take the time to really attach those good memories to your left hand, you will have a powerful source to instantly and powerfully re direct your brain should you ever find yourself thinking less than supportive thoughts. Just open your left hand, and take a moment with your thumb and your fingers recalling all those good memories you&#8217;ve programmed in. Once you cycle through all five, make a fist and hold it up to sybolically chase the bad thoughts that have crept into your brain.</p>
<p>After you <em>do this consciously</em> a few times you won&#8217;t even have to recall the memories. By training your brain in this manner, simply by clenching your left hand into a fist will immediately flood your brain with good thoughts.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As you read this, sitting in that chair, noticing the sounds in your environment, take a moment and remember something that makes you feel good. Any memory will do. Yesterday, last week, three years ago. Got one? Good. It&#8217;s nice to have good memories, isn&#8217;t it? Try it again. Choose a different one. Like that one time, when you did that thing that was so, you know. And when you think of that now, you can remember how that made you feel? Ok?</p>
<p>Sometimes though, you&#8217;ll be walking down the street, minding your own business, and you&#8217;ll see something, and it will remind you of something else, and that will remind you of THAT, and instant blah. Now you&#8217;re in a bad mood. Why did you have to think of that? Don&#8217;t you hate it when that happens? Well this is your lucky day. How would you like to go in and surgically change the feelings of bad memories? So when you remember it, it makes you feel neutral, or even good? How would that be? Ok?</p>
<p>Ok. Here&#8217;s what you need. Think of a semi bad memory (after you learn to do this easily, you can go and destroy bigger and badder memories, pick an easy one for practice.)  Choose one where there is a specific picture you can think of to get that old yucky feeling. Ok, got it? Ok put it aside for now, we&#8217;ll mess it up in a little bit.</p>
<p>Now think of a good memory. Something that you can think of where a picture of it will give you a good feeling. Anything will do.</p>
<p>For example, my bad picture is of this kid that used to tease me in grade school. Called me Georgie Porgie&#8230;kissed the girls&#8230;etc.  And my good picture is of my friends kid, who&#8217;s four and always smiling and laughing and full of energy.</p>
<p>Ok, here&#8217;s what you do. Take the bad picture, and put it in your left hand (in your imagination) and slowly bring it to your face. When you do this, you should slowly feel the semi bad feeling increase in intensity. When your hand gets about halfway to your face, IMMEDIATELY and powerfully bring the other hand, which contains the other GOOD picture to your face, and REALLY FEEL the good feeling hit you full on in the face.</p>
<p>BOOM!</p>
<p>Ok, shake your hands out, think of something neutral, like the middle name of your second cousin spelled backwards or something. Do it again. Remember, left hand slow to your face, semi bad emotion getting more intense, and then BAM (Just like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvazQUYG1kE&amp;feature=related" target="_blank">Emerill</a>) right hand with the good feeling suddenly flooding your surprised brain with good feelings. Remember to see the pictures. If you can&#8217;t see the pictures, just pretend. Your brain doesn&#8217;t know the difference.  Do this 10 or 15 times. It shouldn&#8217;t take more than a couple minutes.</p>
<p>What most people notice, is that after you do this a few times, when you try and think of that old memory that used to give you that old emotion, it doesn&#8217;t work any more. You&#8217;ve successfully scrambled your own brain. Isn&#8217;t that fun? You might have to do this a couple days for it to take, but that&#8217;s normal.</p>
<p>So now, when you are walking down the street thinking about lolly pops and puppy dogs and something hijacks your good feelings with a stray memory, you can straighten it right out. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvazQUYG1kE&amp;feature=related" target="_blank">BAM</a>!</p>
