My goal is to be able to use them rationally and consciously in my orations. NLP seems to deal with these subjects, but, according to wikipedia, there is large criticism of it being Pseudoscience.

read body language books as a first step. they will give an insight into your body laguage, as well as how to read other people’s. the ‘definitive book of body language’ by allan and barbara pease was very usefull for me. then by all means head into nlp, but be careful of it (do your research!). good luck!

Mardy Grothe’s cleverly titled I Never Metaphor I Didn’t Like is a collection of quotations, many unfamiliar, on numerous topics ranging from politics to sports to relationships and beyond. All employ metaphors, similes, and analogies. That makes the book a pleasure for lovers of language, too.

Sleep learning has been employed with varying degrees of success for many years. It is not a completely passive process, however. You can’t plug in headphones, listen to a German CD, and expect to wake up in the morning, fluently speaking German.

About 50% of our daily speech is composed of approximately 100 common words. In fact, the majority of our daily conversation employs less than 1000 words. If you study the most frequently-used 1000 words in any language, you will have a solid foundation on which to build.

You can find frequently-used word lists on the internet for any language by performing searches like the following:

* 1000 most used words Spanish

* 1000 most used words German

* 1000 most used words French

* 1000 most used words Italian

* 1000 most used words Portuguese

You will find thousands of websites offering software, books, audio files, CDs, crossword generators, flashcard software, and other types of language-learning materials. You can use these materials to design and customize your own sleep-learning regimen.

Make sure that you locate appropriate audio files for your vocabulary lists. Produce print-outs and audio recordings for about 100 words per session.

You learn most efficiently when all of your senses are involved. Spend a few minutes just before you go to sleep reading a vocabulary list and repeating after the narrator. Then settle in for a good night’s sleep. Ensure that the volume of your CD- or MP3-player is just audible. A recording that is too loud may disturb your sleep and/or damage your hearing.

In the morning, quickly review the list once again. You should find that your learning progresses at a very brisk pace.

Some individuals may not experience a peaceful night’s sleep using this learning approach. If you are one of these unfortunates, try decreasing the volume. Listen without headphones or earphones – unless you are sharing the bedroom with someone who can’t sleep through the distraction. (Earplugs to the rescue!)

When all else fails, try cutting your sleep short by about an hour and napping for an hour sometime during the day. Use the same technique of reviewing, sleeping, and reviewing that you would for nocturnal sleep-learning.

It you are an intermediate to advanced language student, you might want to try the same approach with audio books. Tackle one chapter at a time, reading it aloud with the narrator, researching and writing down unfamiliar words, then listening to the audio while you sleep. In the morning, read through the chapter again and marvel at how much you have retained since last night’s review session.

Are you adventurous? A self-hypnosis CD played before sleep-learning will encourage brain receptivity. You can even find internet sites that allow you to customize a downloadable self-hypnosis recording in your choice of male or female voice; and there are complete CD sleep-learning packages for specific languages.

Why waste 1/3 of your life in slumber when you could be channeling it into learning your favorite foreign language!

 To understand the importance of tag questions in developing a more responsive listener just stick one at the end of a sentence and observe how the listener will immediately nod or shake their head (which ever is appropriate) without even know what they’re agreeing to most of the time, aren’t they?

You may be reading these thinking ‘well I use these all the time but I’m not some all mighty master of influence’. This may be true but this article is going to show you how to use them at the most appropriate times.

World famous speakers like John Grinder have spoken of this need to get people into a ‘yes’ set – a receptive frame of mind. An efficient way of doing this is to offer the listener three statements, observations or questions that must be true. Once the client has observed the factual nature of these statements they will start to feel a deeper level of trust towards you and they will have developed into the habit of agreeing with you. Tag questions, in conjunction with other techniques, are wonderful ways of eliciting this state.

To demonstrate this a therapist could say ‘you came to see me because you had a problem with X (1st true observation), you had this problem for X months (2nd true observation) and now that we have spoken a little you feel confident we can work together to solve this problem, don’t you? (3rd observation).

Useful Tip: To help move a problem into the past the therapist could have said ‘you had this problem for X months, didn’t you?’ This is much more effective than saying ‘you’ve had this problem for X months, haven’t you?’ or even worse ‘you’re having this problem, aren’t you?’.

You see the importance of using tag questions now, don’t you?

To effectively deliver a tag question you must use a lowering command tone as you would an embedded command at the end of the sentence rather than a rising question. Milton H. Erickson, the pioneer of indirect hypnosis and one of the greatest hypnotherapist of all time used tag questions with a command tone regularly as a way of ensuring that his patients were open to his commands. He would often say things like ‘and you can…focus more…can’t you?’ (Notice the use of embedded commands in bold in conjunction with the tag questions). while watching his videos one will often see the subject nodding passively without any resistance.

You can also used tag questions as reinforcement for post hypnotic suggestions. For example, it is more powerful to say ‘and you will find more confidence…wont you? than ‘and you will find more confidence.’

As you can see tag questions can be an incredibly powerful linguistic tool to help you along the way to persuasion mastery. Strangely enough many people overlook their importance and use more ‘complex’ language patterns when in reality these can have someone agreeing sooner than another technique, can’t they?

After the conceptual metaphoric analysis of text samples exemplifying public discourse on English influence on German, and after providing a condensed overview of major conceptualizations of language and language contact from a linguistic point of view, this final section will summarize the metaphors of both discourse domains. Setting the various conceptual metaphors in relation to each other allows discerning their commonalities and disentangling their characteristic differences. In addition, the joined illustration of conceptual metaphors can help to understand the underlying conceptualizations that render public and academic discourse on English influence incompatible at times. The joined portrayal of conceptual metaphors Merrell Boots follows a gradual cline of conceptualization from more basic, primary metaphors (on top) to more explicit, specific conceptualizations (at the bottom). This is in line with Grady’s (1997) postulate of primary metaphors that form basic constituents of more complex conceptual metaphors.

On a primary level, as the top of Figure 1 shows, both discourse domains ground their understanding of language on its conceptualization as an entity. This conception of language emerges from a general cognitive process of understanding the non-physical/ abstract as physical/concrete. Essential for structuring our understanding along these lines is the basic image schema of CONTAINMENT (cf. Johnson, 1987), which allows us to discern (spatial) relationships and dependencies among physical and, by extension, abstract elements and which generally structures our perception of the world and our being as grounded in nested structures of containment. Language is both physical (as perceived sounds, as visible gestures, and as visible or tactile scripts) and abstract (as cognitive competence) as already expressed in Saussure’s dual characterization of language as parole and langue. Thus, when it comes to conceptualizing the abstract nature of language, mapping properties of its physical aspects (e.g. boundedness and containment) is cognitively speaking close at hand.

Taking the conception of language as an entity as fundamental, public and academic discourse tend to diverge immediately Merrell Sandal in their conception of language as a closed, static entity vs. as an open, fluctuating system. Building on the central notion of containment, language is generally metaphorized as a bounded entity. In linguistic modelling, language is contained internally in the mind of a speaker and language contact is thus conceived of as interacting systems of language in a speaker’s mind. This conceptualization is usually not exploited in public discourse on English influence on German. An understanding of language as a bounded entity external to an individual speaker, however, gives rise to various more specific conceptualizations evident in public opinions on the issue. Thus, apart from the sociolinguistic view of language as bounded in a community of speakers, which evokes the metaphoric conception of language contact as transmission of language elements between speaker communities, public discourse tends to depict language in more concrete terms of speaker-external entities. The data from Die Welt contains conceptualizations of language as a material, organic, and political entity. These images give rise to related metaphoriza-tions of language contact as physical action on material, as physical action on an organism, as growth and change of an organism, and as language contact as migration. The latter conceptualization is closely related to the mainly academic view of contact as transmission of language elements from source to receptor language.

Following the cognitive embedding of conceptual metaphors on language from a more general to a more specific level so far, it appears that public and academic discourse derive their understanding from a common primary metaphoric level of language as a bounded entity. While speaker-internal boundedness seems to be a sole characteristic of academic discourse, public discourse tends to construct an understanding of language on a more concrete material, organic, and social base. In turn, these conceptualizations evoke certain types of metaphors of language contact which can potentially be used to express purist and non-purist attitudes towards English influence on German.

On an NLP course, you will learn that language can act as a filter for external sensory information, meaning that your language can actually affect what you focus on and attend to, which in turn affects what information you store and keep in your memory. We use language to describe primary sensory experience, thereby giving the experience meaning.

For example, we know that depressed people usually display distorted thinking patterns, which influence what information they attend to in the environment. A depressed person will usually focus and pick out negative aspects of an experience and delete positive aspects and their language will contain words that are limiting, and self-critical.

NLP courses teach you about being more aware of the language you use in your own head, during thinking and self-talk because we know that people communicate with themselves in ways that can have positive or negative effects on how they feel and hence how they behave.

NLP supports people in developing and using positive patterns of thinking, so that the person will feel more positive, behave more positively and therefore get better results in their life.

Take a look at the following two sentences:

I feel so angry
I feel peeved

You may have noticed something about how the sentences make you feel? Perhaps you have noticed that the second sentence feels less reactive and a bit calmer or that it opens up more options for behaving.

NLP courses also emphasises that it is important to focus on what you want, rather then what you don’t want. This is because our minds are wired in such a way that we struggle with processing negatives such as “don’t” and “not”. For example, if we were to say to you now, “Do not, whatever you do, think of a pink elephant”, you would have most probably experienced a fleeting image or feelings or sounds about the pink elephant, as your mind found the pink elephant in order to then reject it as something not too be focused on.

On an NLP course that covers clean language you will be taught how to phrase your goals in the positive and how to communicate to others what you really mean.

Besides the huge beneficial changes that can be achieved by using clean language in relation to yourself, NLP courses teach you how to support others in achieving change and moving to more positive emotional states using language. Good covert hypnosis is an ethical process in which both parties benefit. In this articles you’ll discover how to master one of the most powerful covert hypnosis tools, the art of hypnotic language patterns. No matter what I teach you, I want you to promise to always use it ethically and judiciously, and for the benefit of all concern.

Ok, are you ready? Then lets begin. Hypnotic language patterns were given to us by the incredible field of NLP. NLP was created by dr. Richard Bandler and John Grinder, who based many of their conclusions and techniques on the work of Dr. Milton Erickson, a pioneering hypnotherapist.

Milton Erickson was beginning to draw attention to himself by the incredible, arguably miraculous, way his clients and patients would achieve personal transformation, often without Milton Erickson seeming to even do anything.

When creating NLP Bandler and Grinder examined Erickson closely, and broke down his approach into several simple language patterns, which they termed the Milton Model.

One of the most powerful hypnotic language patterns from the Milton Model is the cause and effect pattern. This is one we use everyday without even honking about it, but when we really think deeply about what is going on below the surface of this simple linguistic pattern, it is incredible just how persuasive you can become.

The easiest way to make the most of the powerful cause effect pattern is simply to use the wonderful word because. Because is one of the most powerful words in the English language because people love feeling like the action they want to take is justified, ie that it has a cause and a reason behind it.

Whilst justification is a conscious process, cause is in fact an unconscious process. The fact that you are reading this means you are going to be a covert hypnosis expert. Was that really logical? To begin with do not try to embed more than 5 words. There’s no research to back up the idea of shorter commands being more efficient but using a bit of common sense will demonstrate to you that in everyday life the commands we give to others are often short and concise. And this leads us on to the essence of implanted commands and hypnosis in universal; the exploitation of larned associations

While you’re pondering this you may realise that the purpose of an embedded command is to articulate something in such a way that it triggers the same emotional anchor/association that is linked to everyday commands; obedience

In English this is done by lowering the intonation of your voice towards the end of the sentence. For example, imagine saying ‘clean you room’ with a question tone (raising your voice at the end of the sentence). Now state it as a command. It’s quite an earthshaking difference isn’t it? The command tone is what you will subtly use during a conversation to embed commands

Research has shown time and time again that the brain can establish elaborate patterns that allow you to notice the differences in your surroundings. Why did we germinate this strategy? Well if we consider the acceptcompetent older days when we weren’t top of the food chain and a desirous marauder wanders our way we would have been competent to last much more successfully by the ability to notice even the smallest differences in our environment. The predator had a far less chance of getting his grub if the grub descried him soon enough

So how to utilise this pattern finding mechanism to our benefit. Firstly you must talk with a fairly continual rhythm. This doesn’t intend tiring or decreasing monotonic it just intends at careful rate, you can still alter your tone. Fortunately we all speak with our personal incomparable fairly constant rhythms anyway so you don’t have to think too much about this. What you do have to consider is how you necessitate to change your rhythms when embedding a command. And this is where the pattern happening machine kicks in. While you’re chewing the fat away your conversation partner’s comatose will be very alive of your steady rhythm of speech so when you alter that rhythm it will stand up out (also use a very little pause before and after command for emphasis) and once you append a delicate command tone to the sentence the obedience anchor will be opened fire

So for a couple of practical examples (commands in bold)… “(1)Some people happen it easygoing to…(2)go into trance now…(3)and I’m assured that…” “(1)A person inquired me once, ‘can you…(2)Embed commands in your language…?’(3) and I stated…. Now at step (1) we had average talking speed. Step (2) we had a very concise pause and we decelerated/rushed up the speech with a little command tone. And then in step (3) we got down with another very brief pause and got down speaking at normal speaking rhythm again. And hey presto before… you know it…you’ll be..embedding commands with greater ease…and I’m not stating you’ll..achieve all your goals…but many of them are appearing more attainable, don’t you..agree?
