The Zapotec lived in what is now the Oaxaca
valley of Central Mexico. Generally believed to go
back over 2500 years, they were an advanced
civilization, and left culturally rich evidence of
sports arenas, tombs and intricate religious
symbols.
Some believe they developed the mathematical
systems behind the increasingly famous Mayan
calendar, which supposedly predicts the end of
the world in 2012. Their system of writing is
generally regarded as the first ever in
Mesoamerica, and the predecessor to those of the
Maya and Aztec.
The Zapotec, like many ancient cultures, were
polytheistic with several gods. The god of light,
the rain god, and other gods were prominent in
their daily lives.
It is also widely accepted that the Zapotec used
human sacrifice as a means of communing with
their gods. Whether the participants felt they
were part of a glorious religious ceremony, or a
victim of a horrible murder is still hotly
contested.
They used special ceremonial instruments for the
sacrifices, which included special knives and
special offering bowls for the removed organs.
The organs were placed in the bowls, and then
burned with the smoke carrying the wishes of the
people to the gods, in hopes that they would in
turn bestow them with gifts of healthy crops,
good weather and freedom from disease.
Their system of worship was all but extinguished
with the arrival of the Spanish priests who
brought the new religion of the One True God.
They also brought death, in the form of
conquistadors, and disease that the native's
immune systems were no match for.
In a few short years, the seemingly barbaric
methods of human sacrifice of the Zapotec were
all but forgotten. But not to the priests. Not to
the priests who discovered the horrible truth. And
their involvement. They vowed to keep their
silence, and the truth has remained hidden since
the Catholic conquest of what is now Latin
America.
Until murder victims began showing up in Los
Angeles, killed by methods thought kept secret
for hundreds of years.
And somebody, or something, is killing.
